The substantial move involved seeking a setup of a temporary data centre for the major film industry post-production and visual-effects house...> Learn More...

The Challenge:

The Moving Picture Company (the VFX division of Technicolor) relocated across the street over to the old Mini dealership in the Yaletown district of Vancouver, B.C.

The substantial move also involved seeking a setup of a temporary data centre for the major film industry post-production and visual-effects house. This project was to be the first phase of a total move to the new location of MPC.

MPC contacted numerous local utilities regarding their short-term requirements for their temporary data centre but received no responses.

The Solution:
During an Internet search, MPC connected with AXIS Technical Services. AXIS commenced with an in-depth assessment of the needs and requirements of MPC via telephone and onsite.

The AXIS team met with key personnel from MPC several times to assess the complex challenges of the temporary data centre. AXIS devised an action plan.

The Fiber-Optic cables would run above the building rather than underground, as proposed by local utilities.

AXIS consulted and synergized with multiple teams of contractors and consultants to orchestrate a temporary fiber connection. Highly skilled teams included structural engineers, electrical engineers, architects, government utilities personnel, and city officials. Additional challenges entailed halting the traffic flow through Yaletown for an extended period of time during a busy summer weekend.

The Assessment and Planning Phases were calculated on an hourly basis; the Implementation and Removal Phases conducted on a contractual basis.

Special Circumstances included:

Installation of Fibre-Optic cables commencing at Midnight over a busy weekend

Multiple levels of approval from diverse teams (City, Utilities, Consultants, Business Associations, and Clients)

Overcoming logistical obstacles… utilizing “the Good Name of Vancouver’s Film Industry” to attain approval (as all officials desire a pleased film industry to encourage continuous development)

Fully aware of how the design impacted the building, the inhabitants, the community and the surrounding environment

Multiple scheduling adjustment

The AXIS contribution included the re-configuration of the society’s communication infrastructure in order to better serve the technology requirements of the non-profit organization.

Executive Director, Marie Fenwick, was most grateful to receive the pro bono contribution presented by AXIS partner, Bob Fedoruk.

AXIS partner, Mr. Fedoruk, and his family have an engaging 100+ year commercial fishing legacy and are “Lifetime Residents of the Steveston Area”.

Bob remains very connected to the community in which he lives and serves as the AXIS Director of Sales. Today, his triplet daughters attend Lord Bing Elementary School.

Comparison Models by AXIS Technical Services

As the race for increased data storage and retrieval becomes more intense the server rooms of many organizations are experiencing unacceptable high levels of noise pollution.

A person working in a data center who is subjected to a soaring volume level over 90dB for a prolonged period of time is legally required to wear hearing protection (as stated by the laws of WCB – Workers Compensation Board).

Legacy and modern server rooms across North America are currently averaging a borderline noise level of 85dB. Consequently, the demand to address noise pollution has grown.

With a goal to create healthier work environments as a part of a larger risk management strategy for data centre facilities throughout the world, a new partnership was formed: Primacoustic’s superior products are now supported by AXIS’ design and installation expertise.

Having initiated several sustainable and cost-effective “Green” strategies in the past, the team developed several affordable solutions. Without restricting airflow, Primacoustic and AXIS were able to reduce server room noise pollution up to 10dB. With AXIS’ in-depth knowledge of data center environments, these expanded solutions were a natural fit for the company’s installation capabilities.

Currently, the team is designing, building and implementing noise reduction strategy for the facilities of a national entertainment chain.

“AXIS and Primacoustic are pioneering noise pollution reduction strategies to improve work environments for IT professionals and add to the effectiveness of corporate Green initiatives. Collectively, we feel it is our responsibility to continuously pioneer innovative services to the communications infrastructure industry.”

– Bob Fedoruk, Director of Sales / Partner

Industry Data:

•	Average dB stats: 128dB for back of a plane, 132dB for rock concerts, 85dB for most modern and
optimized communication rooms

•	OHS Regulation Publication regulations (Occupational Health and Safety = legal requirements for employer to implement)

7.2 Noise exposure limits
An employer must ensure that a worker is not exposed to noise levels above either of the following exposure limits:
•	85 dBA Lex daily noise exposure level;
•	140 dBC peak sound level.

7.6 Engineered noise control
7.6 If a worker is exposed to noise above a noise exposure limit, the employer must:
•	Investigate options for engineered noise control
•	When practicable, implement one or more of those options to reduce noise exposure of workers to or below the exposure limits

•	Noise pollution reduction is beneficial for the long-term health of the room, equipment, environment and
people who work there

•	Sound treatment of rooms can be accomplished for a few thousand dollars depending on size and complexity

•	Typical situation in server room: Two people (e.g. Technical and administrator) at only 10 feet apart have to essentially yell at each other to hold a conversation. This is evidence of just how much deafening white noise is filling the room. The fans and power suppliers from each of the servers, hubs, routers, switches, air conditioning units, and other devices in the data center all produce a constant hum or whirl

•	The current trend of data center consolidations and adoption of high-density equipment leads to
further denser and noisier systems in data centers

•	There will be no interruption in tending to tech support issues in the server room and no downtime during a sound treatment installation

Environments include:

•	Data and communication server rooms, mechanical rooms, generator rooms, sound rooms, entertainment facilities, rock concerts and places of worship (churches, etc.)

The luxury downtown waterfront hotel, Pan Pacific Vancouver (est. 1985, as part of the luxury hotel chain Pan Pacific) initiated actions to improve client experience.

As a result, the Vancouver hotel went forward in upgrading their LANs and WANs (wireless accessibility
and technology).

The wireless internet initiative was established by the owners (Ocean Pacific) enabling to offer accessible high-speed internet in keeping with their other hotels across Canada.

AXIS is proud to be part of the exciting and challenging implementation of communication solutions with
Pan Pacific Vancouver and Guest Tek.

The upgrade includes a fiber optic backbone to maximize and support future communication requirements. In addition to this the Pan Pacific hotel will add new network wiring to support future IP TV and high-speed internet for all 503 hotel guest rooms.

AXIS is implementing a Belden certified cabling installation supported by 25-year warranty. This unique project is delivered in collaboration with Guest Tek, which is the world’s largest provider of IP based technology solutions for the hospitality industry – data, voice, video and wireless.

Strategic Services provided:

•	Upgrading a fiber optic backbone to maximize and support future communication requirements of the guest rooms

•	Providing support for IP TV and high-speed internet for all 503 hotel guest rooms

•	As Pan Pacific Vancouver balances the accommodation of both guests and the upgrade of technology, the main challenge is having the AXIS installation team constantly mobilizing, demobilizing and providing cleanup on demand with no disruption to the guests

•	For wireless access points – 5 cables must be installed in solid pathways and conduits on each floor
(there are 15 floors)

•	For each one of the 503 rooms, 2 cables need to be installed (support for IP TV and high speed internet)

•	Communication closets are very small. AXIS is able to use the Belden angled patch panels to provide built in cable management for a neat result

•	Tight timeframe of 4 months
